Summary of the talk

The talk is based on the section of my biography of King Serfoji II (titled “Scholar-King of Tanjore: Serfoji II and Indian Modernity”), in which I deal with Serfoji’s Cholanadu temple pilgrimage in 1800-02, as reflected in the Marathi poem Sharabhendratirthavali and the Sanskrit Brihadisvaramahatmya and other late Mahatmya texts about the Kaveri delta.

Dr. Indira Viswanathan Peterson

Indira Viswanathan Peterson is David B. Truman Professor of Asian Studies at Mount Holyoke College, U.S.A. She has been Professor of Sanskrit at Columbia University, and Fortieth Anniversary Professor at the Five College Consortium of Western Massachusetts. She has a B.A. (honours) in English Literature from Bombay University, and M.A. and Ph.D. degrees in Sanskrit and Indian Studies from Harvard University, U.S.A. Indira Peterson specializes in Indian literature in Sanskrit, Tamil and Marathi, Hinduism, South Indian social and cultural history (classical, medieval, early modern and modern), translation, European-Asian culture contact and comparative literature, and South Indian performing arts and classical music (Carnatic music). She has published widely on all of these subjects.
