Summary of the talk

In 1620 A. D. Raghunatha Nayak of Tanjore wrote a letter on a gold foil giving Tharangampadi (Tranquebar as it is also known) to the Danes. The text in Tamil was mistranslated in 1741 A. D. giving rise to several misconceptions. The speaker will try to clarify the circumstances under which the foil was inscribed. The early history of Tranquebar as revealed in Danish records shows many surprising facts regarding the Nayak dynasty, which will also be discussed.
